&a+672HShareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
&a+312Hbuying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are
&a+312Hexpected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
&a+312Hrequest registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
&a+312Htrial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
&a+312Hto continue using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
&a+672HCopyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
&a+312Hthe copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions
&a+312Has stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just
&a+312Hlike commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In
&a+312Hboth cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is
&a+312Hin the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right
&a+312Hto copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
&a+312Hspecific group. For example, some authors require written permission
&a+312Hbefore a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
&a+672HShareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
&a+312Hshould find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's
&a+312Hcommercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs
&a+312Heasier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is
&a+312Hlow, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back
&a+312Hguarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
&a+312H&dDDisclaimer&d@
&a+672HThe fact that BOOKLET will print on both sides of the paper does not
&a+312Himply that this is accepted practice for your particular printer.
&a+312HSympathetic Software is not responsible for damage resulting from
&a+312Hignoring manufacturers recommendations. That said, we have yet to hear
&a+312Hof any difficulties worse than paper jams when using this utility. Also,

&l8C&a+312H&dDIntroduction&d@
&a+672HBOOKLET is designed to create PC Booklet sized documents from full
&a+312Hpage text files on Laser Printers which emulate the Hewlett-Packard
&a+312HLaserJet series. Also supported are the DeskJet family by Hewlett-
&a+312HPackard. It prints four pages of the text file on one sheet of paper.
&a+312HThe pages are printed "half size" on the right and left halves of both
&a+312Hsides of a sheet of paper turned sideways (Landscape orientation.) It
&a+312Hsupports all the standard sizes of paper (A4, LETTER, LEGAL, and
&a+312HEXECUTIVE)
&a+672HBOOKLET will perform transformation on basic LaserJet formatting
&a+312Hcommands. This means that you can use your word processor to print a
&a+312Hformatted document to a file and use BOOKLET to print that file in
&a+312Hbooklet form. (You must get your word processor to create a file with
&a+312HPCL commands. Generally this is done by a "Print to disk" command.
&a+312HBOOKLET &dDcannot&d@ print from your word processor's internal data file
&a+312Hformat.) For this to be successful, you must have fonts loaded in your
&a+312Hprinter for the sizes BOOKLET will use. These can be from a font
&a+312Hcartridge or may be soft fonts which you have loaded ahead of running
&a+312HBOOKLET. BOOKLET does not create or load any fonts. You will need fonts
&a+312Hwhich are approximately two thirds the point size of the fonts you use in
&a+312Hyour document. If you do not have exactly the right font, the LaserJet
&a+312Hwill select the closest match from the ones it has. This match may or
&a+312Hmay not prove acceptable.
&a+672HFor plain ASCII text BOOKLET will select the 16.67 character per
&a+312Hinch landscape lineprinter font. This font does not exist on either the
&a+312Horiginal LaserJet or the LaserJet+. You will need to use a font
&a+312Hcartridge having this font or load a soft font equivalent before running
&a+312HBOOKLET.
&a+672HBOOKLET transforms only font, line spacing, and cursor positioning
&a+312Hcommands. It will discard page control commands such as page size, page
&a+312Horientation, and margins. If your document contains these, it may not
&a+312Hprint correctly.
&a+312H&dDOPERATION&d@
&a+672HBOOKLET is run from the command line specifying the file to be
&a+312Hprinted and, optionally, parameters. You can configure BOOKLET with your
&a+672HNote: items enclosed by brackets ([]) are optional. (the brackets
&a+312Hare never typed.) If an item is not specified, the default will be used.
&a+312HYou may change the defaults for BOOKLET by using the /C parameter to
&a+312Hrecord the options you have selected. The values for your custom options
&a+312Hare kept in a file called BOOKLET.INI which will be found in the same
&a+312Hdirectory as the BOOKLET program. BOOKLET-Screen uses this same file, so
&a+312Hyou the defaults you save will apply to both programs.
&a+672HItems separated by vertical bars (|) are choice items. That is, +|-
&a+312Hmeans you can use the plus (+) or you can use the minus (-). Plus will
&a+312Hset an option. Minus resets it. The slash is not needed when either
&a+312Hplus or minus is used. If the file name you wish to print contains a
&a+312Hslash, plus, minus, or space you will have to enclose the name within
&a+312Hquotation marks.
&a+312H+|-A &dDA&d@nnounce completion of first side printing with beep
&a+1032HThis is useful for printers with a small buffer. When the
&a+1032Hprinter has a large buffer, The beep will come way before the
&a+1032Hprinter is finished.
&a+312HAS:[num][,num] left and top &dDA&d@uto &dDS&d@kip
&a+1032HThis option is used to indicate the amount of space that the
&a+1032Hprinter automatically skips over. This area is a "forced"
&a+1032Hmargin unique to the printer. LaserJet printers have an auto
&a+1032Hskip left margin of three characters. They have no top auto
&a+1032Hskip.
&a+1032HYou determine left auto skip by multiplying the printers left
&a+1032Hunprintable area in inches (this is on the short edge of the
&a+1032Hpaper since BOOKLET prints in landscape orientation) by 16.67.
&a+1032H(The font BOOKLET uses is 16.67 characters per inch.)
&a+1032HYou will need a top auto skip if the printer automatically
&a+1032Hskips lines before starting printing. The Hewlett-Packard
&a+1032HDeskJet printers do this. Compute the top auto skip by
&a+1032Hmultiplying the distance it skips (in inches) by 6.
&a+1032HDeskJet Plus printers have a half inch left margin and a
&a+1032Hquarter inch top margin. For them you would use a left auto
&a+1032Hskip of 8.34 and a top auto skip of 1.5.
&a+1032HNote: you must set your margins to be at least as large as the
&a+1032Hauto skip values.
&a+1032HThe defaults are: left auto skip: 3, top auto skip: 0.
&a+312HB:num sheets in each &dDB&d@inding
&a+1032HIf a booklet contains too many pages, it will be difficult to
&a+1032Hfold. The resulting booklet will be too thick. This option(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1944HPage &d@&dD7&d@

&a+1032Hfolding. Thus, the booklet could consist of several folios
&a+1032Heach with up to 'num' sheets of paper. The default is 255
&a+1032Hsheets. This is also the maximum value. Booklets with more
&a+1032Hsheets will be printed as multiple folios.

&a+1032HThis option updates the BOOKLET.INI file with the option
&a+1032Hsettings you have selected.
&a+312HD:Lower|Upper|MP &dDD&d@efault paper source
&a+1032HThis option specifies the default paper source for BOOKLET.
&a+1032HUpper is for the upper paper tray, Lower is for the Lower paper
&a+1032Htray and MP is for the LaserJet IIP and IIIP Multi-purpose
&a+1032Htray. If you have only one tray, Lower and Upper will be
&a+1032Hequivalent.
&a+1032HThe default is Lower.
&a+312H+|-F[:"heading description"] print &dDF&d@ooter at the bottom of each
&a+312H page
&a+1032HIf Footer is set, A Footer will be printed at the bottom of
&a+1032Heach page. For a description of how to define a Footer, see
&a+1032H&dDHeading Descriptions&d@, Page 12.
&a+1032HDefault is no Footer.
&a+312H+|-H[:"heading description"] print &dDHeader&d@ at the top of each page
&a+1032HIf Header is set, A Header will be printed at the top of each
&a+1032Hpage. For a description of how to define a Header, see &dDHeading&d@
&a+1032H&dDDescriptions&d@, Page 12.
&a+1032HDefault is no Header.
&a+312HG:num &dDG&d@utter columns;
&a+1032HThe Gutter is the space around the fold. Setting the Gutter
&a+1032Hadds columns to the right of even pages and to the left of odd
&a+1032Hpages. This allows extra space for binding the booklet. See
&a+1032HMARGINS below for further detail.
&a+1032HDefault is 2 columns.
&a+312HJ[S][P]:num[:num] &dDJ&d@ump to sheet [page] number;
&a+1032HThis option is used when recovering from printer failures
&a+1032Hduring previous runs of BOOKLET. That is, if you have a paper
&a+1032Hjam on the third sheet, you can rerun BOOKLET using the same
&a+1032Hparameters but adding /J:3 and it will not reprint the first(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1944HPage &d@&dD8&d@

&a+1032Hcontaining page 'num'.
&a+1032HThe second 'num' is the sheet (or page) on which printing
&a+1032Hshould stop. /J:3:5 will print three sheets starting with
&a+1032Hsheet three.
&a+1032H'S' is added when you wish to reprint using previously printed
&a+1032Hfirst sides. /JSP:5 will restart printing of the second sides
&a+1032Hstarting with the sheet which contains page five and continuing
&a+1032Hto the sheet with the last page. /JSP:3:12 will restart
&a+1032Hprinting the sheets containing pages three through 12.
&a+1032HSee RECOVERING FROM PRINTER ERRORS below for a discussion of
&a+1032Hprinter error recovery.
&a+1032HDefault is to start printing both sides from the beginning.
&a+312H+|-K:SIMPLEX|DUPLEX|MP|DJ|INVERTED select the &dDK&d@ind of
&a+312H laser printer feed.
&a+1032HThis option sets the page printing order appropriate for paper
&a+1032Hfeed technique.
&a+1032HSIMPLEX is the normal mode. The printed first sides are placed
&a+1032Hface down back into the paper feed tray for second side
&a+1032Hprinting.
&a+1032HINVERTED is used if your printer stacks the output face up
&a+1032Hinstead of face down. Otherwise, it functions the same as
&a+1032HSIMPLEX.
&a+1032HMP is used for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIP and IIIP
&a+1032Hprinters. The printed output is placed face up in these
&a+1032Hprinters' &dDMulti-Purpose Tray&d@ for second side printing. (The
&a+1032Hpaper for the first side may be fed from either the MP tray or
&a+1032Hthe lower cassette.) NOTE: If you have selected LC ONLY from
&a+1032Hthe IIP front panel MP will not be able to function. For most
&a+1032Happlications, selecting LC TRAY will provide the same paper
&a+1032Hsource as LC ONLY but allows software switching of trays. ALSO
&a+1032HNOTE: if you are using the front output tray in conjunction
&a+1032Hwith the MP tray, these printers function like the DeskJet
&a+1032Hseries. Use K:DJ.
&a+1032HDJ is used for the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet series printers.
&a+1032HThese stack face up, but feed differently so that INVERTED does
&a+1032Hnot produce a proper output order.
&a+1032HDUPLEX is used with printers such as the HP LaserJet IID which
&a+1032Hare capable of printing on both sides of the page on their own.
&a+1032HDefault is SIMPLEX feed.(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1944HPage &d@&dD9&d@

&a+1032HA normal LETTER size document has 66 lines per page. A4
&a+1032Hdocuments can have up to 70 lines. You should select the
&a+1032Hnumber of lines to be printed per page that is appropriate to
&a+1032Hthe document you are printing.
&a+1032HBOOKLET uses this number to compute line spacing. If you set
&a+1032Hthe number too large, the lines will overprint each other. On
&a+1032HA4 paper, 70 lines plus the header and footer works.
&a+1032HDefault is 66 lines.
&a+312HM:[num][,num][,num][,num] left and right indent columns, top
&a+312H and bottom &dDM&d@argins
&a+1032HThe first number is the number of characters each line is
&a+1032Hindented from the left. The second number is the number of
&a+1032Hcolumns reserved for a right margin. The last two numbers are
&a+1032Hthe top and bottom margins.
&a+1032HThe amount of non printable margin varies with the printer
&a+1032Hmodel. The LaserJet IIP is quite happy with a top margin of 1
&a+1032Hline. The LaserJet II will lose a line unless the top margin
&a+1032His 2 lines. See below for a further discussion of margins.
&a+1032HYour margins must be at least as large as your printer's auto
&a+1032Hskip regions for proper printing.
&a+1032HDefault is 4 column left indent, 4 column right indent, two
&a+1032Hlines top indent, and two lines bottom indent.
&a+312HO:filename set &dDO&d@utput file name
&a+1032HThis option allows output to be sent to disk file or to a
&a+1032Hspecific printer on a port. To print on the second printer
&a+1032Hport use O:LPT2. If output is being sent to a disk file and
&a+1032Hthe second side pause handling is set to Wait, two output files
&a+1032Hwill be created, one for each side. BOOKLET will add a "1" or
&a+1032H"2" to the suffix of the filename to indicate side one or two.
&a+1032HDefault is LPT1
&a+312HP:Wait|None|ManualFeed second side &dDP&d@ause handling
&a+1032HThis controls what happens between printing the first side and
&a+1032Hthe second side. Specifying Wait will cause BOOKLET to wait
&a+1032Hfor the Enter key before printing the second side. ManualFeed
&a+1032Hcauses BOOKLET to select manual feed for the first sheet
&a+1032Hprinted on the second side. (This is specially useful if your
&a+1032Hprinter is on a network. The printer stops waiting for a
&a+1032Hmanual feed while you reload the paper for the second side.
&a+1032HJust put the top sheet in the manual feed when you are ready.

&a+1032HDefault is no line.
&a+312HZD:num:num debug dump pages
&a+1032HThis option allows copying of pages to a file for debugging
&a+1032Hpurposes. When this option is used, BOOKLET copies source file

&a+1032Hfile named BOOKLET.DMP.
&a+312H? print the usage summary.
&a+672HIf a filename contains spaces, slashes or a plus or minus character
&a+312Hyou will have to enclose it within quotation marks. Otherwise, BOOKLET
&a+312Hwill treat the portion of then name following these characters as an
&a+312Hoption. Either single or double quotation marks may be used so long as
&a+312Hthe same mark is used to close the quotation as to start it.
&a+672HIt is possible to change the font BOOKLET uses as a default when it
&a+312Hprints ASCII text. To do this, you must edit the BOOKLET.INI file.
&a+312HThere is no command line option for this function. (You can create a
&a+312Hdefault BOOKLET.INI file by using the customization option described
&a+312Habove.) You change the default font that Booklet will use in printing
&a+312Hyour document by editing the DefaultTypeFace PCL string in the
&a+312HBOOKLET.INI file. This string is sent to the printer without checking,
&a+312Hso you should carefully consult your printer manual when you make
&a+312Hchanges. The initial default shown selects the Lineprinter font with the
&a+312HPC-8 character set.
&a+672HIf you have a printer which supports reverse landscape printing you
&a+312Hset ReversePage = True in your BOOKLET.INI file. Booklet will then use
&a+312Hreverse landscape printing to properly orient the front and back pages
&a+312Hwhen printing in ringbinder mode. The Hewlett Packhard LaserJet III and(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD12&d@

&a+312H&dDHEADING DESCRIPTIONS&d@
&a+672HHeaders and Footers (headings) are printed based on the heading
&a+312Hdefinition associated with each. You can place any text you wish on a
&a+312Hheading. The only constraint is that it must be less than 128 characters
&a+312Htotal. In addition to simple text, you may include things like the page
&a+312Hnumber or file name by using the tokens defined below. The heading can
&a+312Hbe highlighted by over bars and under bars and with LaserJet shading and
&a+312Hpattern fills (assuming your printer supports this feature.)
&a+672HThe text and tokens be centered or set flush to the right margin.
&a+312H(By default they are left flush.) A header or footer can be made up of a
&a+312Hcombination of left flush, centered and right flush text. Any text
&a+312Hpreceded by &dD@C&d@ is centered and any text preceded by &dD@R&d@ is set right
&a+312Hflush. You may have only one each of the tokens &dD@C&d@ and &dD@R&d@ in a heading.
&a+672HThe text and tokens must be enclosed with quotation marks, otherwise
&a+312Hany spaces, slashes, plus signs or minus signs would be interpreted as
&a+312Hthe beginning of the next command line parameter.
&a+672HThe following tokens substitutions are defined for customizing your
&a+312Hheading:
&a+528H&P inserts the page number
&l4C
&l8C&a+528H inserts total number of pages
&l4C
&l8C&a+528H&F.E inserts the name of the file being printed

&l4C
&l8C&a+528H&Bnum inserts a Cross-Hatch pattern on top of the header of footer.
&a+1032Hnum is a digit Refer to your printer manual for Rectangular
&a+1032HArea Cross-hatch Fill.
&l4C
&l8C&a+528H&& inserts an ampersand character
&l4C
&l8C&a+528H&@ inserts an at sign
&a+528H&{ inserts a brace
&a+672H&CT and &FT may optionally be followed by a time format description.
&a+312HThis description is enclosed in braces ("{" and "}"). Use H where you
&a+312Hwant hours, MM for minutes and SS for seconds. Use HH for 24 hour
&a+312Hnotation. For example, {H:MM:SS} gives the time as 4:45:17 pm. This is
&a+312Hthe default format. {HHMM} gives 1645.
&l4C
&l8C&a+672H&FD and &CD may also have a format description string following.
&a+312HAgain, these are enclosed in braces. D gives the date, M the month, and
&a+312HYY the year. DD insures the date is two digits. Likewise MM insures the
&a+312Hmonth is two digits. MMM will print the name of the month. YYYY will
&a+312Hgive a 4 digit year. Examples of date format: {dd-mm-yy} gives
&a+312H02-10-91. {mmm d, yyyy} gives October 2, 1991.
&l4C
&l8C&a+312H&dDSample Headings&d@
&a+672H+H:"&U@C&F.E - &FD{MMM d, YYYY}" gives a header with the full file
&a+312Hname and date (separated by a hyphen) centered with a line underneath.
&a+312HThis header will look as follows:
&a+672H&dD BOOKLET.PCL - September 26, 1991 &d@
&a+672H+F:"&O@C- &P -" gives a footer with the page number between two
&a+312Hhyphens. This is centered and has a line over it. This footer looks as
&a+312Hfollows:
&a+672H&dD &d@
&a+672H - 5 -
&a+672H+H:"&o&u&s5&f@r&dt{m/d/y}" will create a shaded bar with solid
&a+312Hlines at the top and bottom. On that bar, to the left will be the file
&a+312Hname (without the extension). The date the booklet was printed will be(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD14&d@

&a+672H+F:"@rPage &p of " will place a page indicator at the bottom
&a+312Hright corner of each page of your booklet. For example: Page 5 of 10.
&a+672HPrints page 12 ('/jsp:12:12' jumps to page 12 of the document and
&a+312Hbegins printing on the second side) of BOOKLET.PCL on A4 paper ('/s:a4').
&a+312HPrinting is full size ('-t' option). The '/r:0' option insures that only
&a+312Hpage 12 is printed as it causes the page order to be sequential. (The
&a+312H':0' eliminates the extra margin for ring binder holes.) The 'm:11' and
&a+312H'l:66' options are as above.
&a+312Hbooklet booklet.pcl /o:formated.prn
&a+672HFormats BOOKLET.PCL using the default options and writes it to the
&a+312Hfile FORMATED.PRN for later copying to the printer. You could use this
&a+312Hif you wish to make multiple copies of the document. Just copy
&a+312HFORMATED.PRN to the printer for as many copies as you wish.(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD15&d@

&a+312H even page odd page
&a+312HLaser printers have an unprintable area of about three columns around the
&a+312Hedges of the paper. A left indent of three (on a LaserJet) is required
&a+312Hto prevent loss of characters at the left side of the paper. Likewise, a
&a+312Hright indent of three is needed. If your printer clips characters at the
&a+312Hend of the right side of the paper it is because the unprintable region
&a+312His larger than three columns. To correct this you will need to adjust
&a+312Hthe left and right indents. A similar situation exists with the top and
&a+312Hbottom margins. If you get character clipping from your print out,
&a+312Hincrease the these margins.
&a+672HWith mono-spaced 12 point fonts you can compute the characters which
&a+312Hcan be printed across the logical page. The formula for this is:
&a+312H C = Truncate((L * 16.67 - 1)/2)-RightIndent-LeftIndent-Gutter
&a+312H L is the long dimension of the page
&a+312H C is the characters per line on the logical page
&a+312HFor example on 8.5x11 inch paper (LETTER) with a three column left indent
&a+312Hand no gutter, the formula is:
&a+312H C = Truncate((11 * 16.67 - 1)/2) - 3
&a+312Hwhich gives 88 characters per logical page. Remember that the left
&a+312Hindent must be at least three characters because of the unprintable left
&a+312Hmargin.
&a+312H&dDWORD PROCESSOR DOCUMENTS&d@
&a+312HBOOKLET has the ability to handle documents from most word processors
&a+312Hprovided that you get the word processor to apply its printer formatting(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD16&d@
&l4C
&l8C&a+312Hfirst. Typically, you do this by having the word processor "print" the
&a+312Hdocument to a disk file. The file thus created will contain Printer
&a+312HControl Language (PCL) codes that manage the font selection and
&a+312Hformatting of the document when it is printed. BOOKLET will process
&a+312Hthese codes and modify them appropriately for the reduced sized document
&a+312Hit produces.
&a+312HFor example, if you are using Microsoft Word for DOS (version 5.5) and
&a+312HMicrosoft Word for Windows, select "File", "Print", in the dialog box
&a+312Hwhich comes up, select "to File" then fill in the name of the file to be
&a+312Hcreated. (WinWord will pup up a dialog box for the name.) This will
&a+312Hcause Word to format the file as if it were printing it, but put the
&a+312Houtput in the file you named.
&a+312HFor both the DOS and Windows version of WordPerfect you create a PCL file
&a+312Hby setting the printer to be a disk file. This is achieved by setting the
&a+312Hprinter port to a file name instead of to the normal port such as LPT1:,
&a+312HCOM2: etc.
&a+312HFor WP DOS this is achieved with the keystrokes Shift-F7,S,3,2,8 and then
&a+312Henter a file name at the prompt. Continue hitting Enter until you are
&a+312Hback at the first menu and then select the appropriate print option.
&a+312HFor WPWIN, with the mouse, select "File", "Print", "Select", "Setup", and
&a+312H"Port" from the Destination Group. This will produce a drop down dialog
&a+312Hbox. Select File. You will then be placed in an edit box so that you can
&a+312Henter a file name. After entering this just "OK" your way back, select
&a+312Hthe printer and print from the opening print dialog box.
&a+312HRemember to go back and repeat the above procedures to restore the port
&a+312Hselection to the one to which you printer is connected.
&a+312HMost other word processors will have a similar mechanism. Remember, if
&a+312Hyou enter a file name without a path, it will be created in whatever is
&a+312Hthe default directory at the time. Therefore, it is better to enter a
&a+312Hfull path for the file name. It is also a good idea to use a convention
&a+312Hfor the suffix of your filename such as "PCL". (E.g. the file could be
&a+312Hnamed OUTPUT.PCL). File suffixes will help you keep things straight.
&a+312HRemember, BOOKLET does not create any fonts. It will scale any font
&a+312Hspecification in your document and leave it up to your printer to pick
&a+312Hthe closest match. Sometimes this match is not compatible with the
&a+312Hformatting precision of your document. If you have a printer with built
&a+312Hin scaleable fonts (such as the Hewlett Packhard LaserJet III) use those
&a+312Hwhen you format your document. See also FONT SELECTION on page 11.
&a+312H&dDRECOVERING FROM PRINTER ERRORS&d@
&a+672HBOOKLET will detect and recover from temporary print interruptions
&a+312Hsuch as &dDOut of Paper&d@ or &dDPrinter Not Ready&d@. It will display a message
&a+312Hwhen it has detected such a condition and will erase the message and
&a+312Hresume printing once you have corrected the problem. It may display an
&a+312Herror number rather than a text message. These are traps for errors for
&a+312Hwhich I do not know the meaning. Should one of these occur, you will be(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD17&d@
&l4C
&l8C&a+312Hgiven the option of Retrying or Aborting the printing. The state of the
&a+312Hprinter may be lost due to the error. If so, continuing will not produce
&a+312Hcorrect output.
&a+672HOne cause of print interruption is paper jams. Recovery from these
&a+312Hmay take some effort on your part. Generally Laser printers will reprint
&a+312Hpages involved in paper jams. If you let it do so during the second side
&a+312Hprinting of your document, you may find that the back sides may not be
&a+312Hprinted on the appropriate front side. If the original page is
&a+312Hundamaged, you should re feed it. Otherwise, you can feed a blank page
&a+312Hfor the reprint and use the /J option to reprint the damaged page.
&a+672HIt may be simplest to abort printing when the jam occurs. You then
&a+312Hreset the printer and start again using the /J option. You can reprint
&a+312Hthe sheet involved with /J:n:n (n is the sheet number of the jam.) Then
&a+312Hyou can resume printing of the second sides (on the remaining front
&a+312Hsides) by using the /JS parameter to print the remainder of the pages.
&a+312HNote: When you restart printing of the second sides, BOOKLET assumes you
&a+312Hhave already placed the first sides into the paper feed tray ready for
&a+312Hprinting. It does not prompt you for this.
&a+672HIf you find it necessary to stop BOOKLET from printing at any time,
&a+312Hjust press the ESC key. BOOKLET will stop and offer you the chance to
&a+312Hcontinue or abort the printing.
&a+312H&dDPAPER CURL&d@
&a+672HMost problems with jamming are caused by paper curl. The heat of
&a+312Hthe printing tends to cause paper to warp. There are two things you can
&a+312Hdo to minimize this problem. The first is to use good quality laser
&a+312Hprinter paper stock. The second is to manually take the curl out of the
&a+312Hpaper. Since good quality paper costs up to three times ordinary copier
&a+312Hpaper, the second option is often chosen.
&a+672HTake the output from the first pass printing. Hold it face up by
&a+312Hthe short sides. Find a sharp edge, such as the edge of a desk. Draw
&a+312Hthe paper across the edge as if you were polishing shoes with it. This
&a+312Hwill introduce a curl opposite the one caused by the printer.
&a+312H&dDFONT SELECTION&d@
&a+672HWhen BOOKLET prints a document containing font selection codes, it
&a+312Hconverts those codes by scaling the pitch and point size parts of the
&a+312Hcode. These are scaled such that the effect is for fonts to be specified
&a+312Hwith all the same type face characteristics as the original, but with the
&a+312Hsize of the type face about two thirds the original.
&a+672HIf the printer you are using is a LaserJet III and you have selected
&a+312Ha scaleable type face, then the printout will be a page of text which is
&a+312Han image of the original but two thirds the size. When the selected type
&a+312Hface is not scaleable, the printer will use a font selection matching
&a+312Halgorithm. Hewlett-Packard printers use a priority selection scheme
&a+312Hwhich considers, in order of priority, orientation, symbol set, pitch (if
&a+312Hthe font is not proportional), font point size, type face style, and(10U(s3t12vpsb10H&a480V&a+312H(10U(s0t14.9vpsb12H&dDJuly 3, 1993&d@&dD&a+1080HBOOKLET v4.4 &a+1872HPage &d@&dD18&d@
&l4C
&l8C&a+312Hstroke weight. For a full treatment of this algorithm, see your
&a+312Hprinter's reference manual.
&a+672HThe effect of this algorithm is for the printer to use a font it
&a+312Hbelieves is the "closest" to what was requested. For BOOKLET, in most
&a+312Hcases this means it will use the 16.67 character per inch lineprinter
&a+312Hfont. Even when there is a small font with the right type face for the
&a+312Hprinter to select, the results may not be what you would expect. The
&a+312Hselection algorithm may result in a font which does not work well for the
&a+312Hreduced document. This will often be the case when you have used
&a+312Hproportional fonts and proportional spacing in your document. The result
&a+312Hmay be words overlapping each other.
&a+672HThere is not much BOOKLET can do about problems of font selection.
&a+312HYou can experiment with different fonts to find the most pleasing result.
&a+672HOther difficulties you may have with format transformations are that
&a+312Hcentering and tab spacing may not scale proportionally. This is due to
&a+312Hdifferences between the scaled font size and the actual font used by the
&a+312Hprinter. If you use spaces to do your formatting and stick to one font
&a+312Hsize, the output will generally look correct.
&a+312HAlso, often the small fonts selected by the font scaling do not have &dDbold&d@
&a+312Hor &dDitalic&d@ type faces. If this is the case, you will lose these accents.
&a+312HUnderline is always present (except for the DeskJet series printers), so
&a+312Hyou can substitute it.
&a+312H&dDERRORLEVELs&d@
&a+672HBooklet returns the following ERRORLEVELs which may be tested in
